Joe flies the flag for Welsh animation at prestigious European training workshop

A student from the University of Wales, Newport will get a boot-camp style taste of European animation training when he starts his journey through the prestigious Animation Sans Frontieres workshop series later this month.

The 8-week programme is run by and at four of the leading animation film schools in Europe: Filmakademie (Germany), MOME (Budapest), Les Gobelins (Paris) and The Animation Workshop (Denmark). The MEDIA-funded workshop, designed to strengthen networks between education and industry, will put students from across Europe through their paces with over-night presentations, industry pitches and studio visits over four workshop during the next 6 months.

Joseph Wallace, 21, studies BA Animation at the University of Wales, Newport, a lead partner of the Skillset Screen Academy Wales. A promising animator and a keen networker, Joseph has received funding support from both his university and Screen Academy Wales to act as an ambassador for Welsh animation education.

“It is a massive honour to be selected to represent my university and the Screen Academy Wales network”, Joe explained. “There is a sense of pressure but I’m so looking forward to working with students from all over Europe and learning from these amazing animation schools.”

A group of 16 students will travel to each the partner institutions for a two week learning module that will give an overview of the entire animation film production process, from concept development through to actual production management.

Bristol-born Joe currently specialises in 2D stop motion, and uses his flair for illustration to express his ideas. Outside of university, his passion for animation has been heavily influenced by the theatrical, with involvement in promotional artwork and directing at the Old Vic Theatre, and more recently in an off-beat animation theatre project for the Tabacco Factory, which integrates animation into live performance through puppetry.

His tutor, Caroline Parsons of University of Wales, Newport, explained: “Joe is one of only two students in the UK to have been offered a place on the ASF programme. It will provide an excellent opportunity for him to get a flavour of the European animation industry, and his taking part will help to establish links between Wales and the South West and animation schools in Europe. We’re confident that Joe will be a great ambassador for the University of Wales, Newport and Screen Academy Wales.”

Screen Academy Wales Project Manager, Hannah Raybould, added: “Joe is an enthusiastic member of our Student Panel and passionate about animation. We were delighted to help fund his participation in the programme and hope that he will be the first of many Screen Academy Wales students to champion Welsh animation within the ASF network.”

Gus Arteaga, MA Animation graduate from 2007 has won the best UK film prize at the London International Animation Festival.

Mexican by birth, Gus settled in the UK many moons ago. He came to the medium of animation via photography, bringing with him a sensibility of lens-based image making, and thereby a sophisticated use of the camera apparatus in animated 3D stop Motion film. He incorporates ocular trickery, using disorientating angles and distortions, shadows and silhouettes, focus pulling and other visual illusions, creating a strange, otherworldly viewing experience. Perhaps his magic realist style is attributable to his mexican roots, coupled with his links to the renowned Estonian Nuku film Studios, where he worked for a short period of time in 2005.

Gus graduated from the MA Animation programme at Newport in 2007, after completing the Newport BA Animation programme.

A judge’s comment :

‘In some way this film reminded me of the work of the late, great Oliver Postgate - which is one of the biggest compliments I can give. By skillfully combining traditional storytelling, simple but effective puppet animation and beautiful abstract photography, the director has created an atmospheric and magical world, evoking a child-like sense of innocence and wonder’.

Caroline says : This success is significant because Gus’s work invites us to return to a pre-digital, altogether more innocent form of filmic storytelling, which celebrates puppet animation at a time when it is most threatened. He clearly champions film making as craft, a position that has been become rarefied by the predominance of digital production.

Animator in Residence 2009 launched!

We are pleased to announce the launch of our Animator in Residence scheme for 2009. Now in its 4th year, this highly successful scheme offers a one month residency to an experienced animator/director starting mid-May to mid-June 2009 (exact start date to be negotiated with the successful applicant). The successful applicant will work in-house with a small group of students to complete a 30-90 seconds film of their own design.

Felix Massie's new film

Felix Massie (with funding from the UK Film Council, South West Screen and Aardman) completed his second film last year. It's called, 'The surprise demise of Francis Cooper's mother' and is the story of Francis Cooper and his mother; Emily Maddison and that man's face; and Craig MacKay and his cat.

You can see a short clip below and a complete list of credits and promotional stills here.

It has so far been shown at Animex, Encounters and the Northern Lights Film Festivals and is also being shown at Animated Exeter this weekend in the Screen Out Loud category (Sunday 15th, 4.30pm) and in competition at Florida Film Festival in April.

Homeland performed with live music!

Last month Jonay's graduation film Homeland (2007) was screened at the ICA in London as part of the Open Rehearsal and the Cultural Olympiad launch. Homeland was screened, as Jonay originally intended, with the live original music for prepared piano performed by the composer and Big Bang Lab director Sergio López Figueroa. Tom and Dan to date have received 28 international awards including winning Newport ‘Best Graduation Film 2007’ at Annecy International Animation Festival for the second year running, ‘Best Student Film 2006’ at Norwich International Animation Festival, ‘Cartoon D’or Nomination 2006’ at Encounters International Short Film Festival, ‘Honorable Mention for Short Filmmaking 2007’ at the Sundance Film Festival and most recently, two awards at the British Animation Awards 2008.

Having recently signed with Blacklist and Picasso Pictures for North America and Europe respectively, Holbrook’s Films have just directed their first commercial and are currently developing a script for another short film.

Annecy 08 turned out to be a fruitful affair...23 students braved the variable weather in the Belvedere - campsite of choice for the last 5 years.

Some excellent films programmed including 'Operator' by Matthew Walker, our Newport Animator in Residence film from 2007, plus 'Keith Reynolds can't make it Tonight' by Felix Massie, 2007 graduate.

The students made use of the surgeries and attended conferences - feedback from which was all very good.

This was the second year that we've run a stand at the Mifa Market, and we attracted a lot of interest - both for recruiting graduates and giving them a chance to display work internationally, and for attracting new students.

Not many Photos this year - too busy rushing around! I've thrown in a couple from last year for good measure...

Into The Inkwell (2007)

During the first semester of their second year, students are given a chance to attend workshops in 2D, CG or Stop-Motion animation. They are then required to produce a 30 second film using their chosen discipline.

Into The Inkwell was created by Rhiannon Evans. It was made using Stop Motion Pro and edited with Avid. The music was created by Mark Boden, a student at the Royal Welsh College Of Music And Drama.

Newport Animator in Residence Scheme 2008

The Scheme
The University of Wales, Newport Animation Department at the Screen Academy, Wales are offering a one month residency to an experienced animator/ director working in any medium (2D/3D Stop motion/3D CG). This will take place in May 2008 (to be negotiated with the successful applicant).

You will be an inspiring creative who can work quickly and economically with students to develop an innovative time-based piece of work on a topic of your choice. You will be someone who can explore and explode the conventions of the medium of animation to produce either a narrative or non-narrative film.

Details
The successful director will work with a small group of students over a month long period to a complete a 30-60 seconds film with sound.

He/She will deliver a 2 day workshop for under/post-graduate students relating to their specialism.

He/She will deliver a public screening of his/her work at the end of the project. This will form part of the degree show activities in June 2008.

Who is eligible?
The scheme will be open to all English speaking European filmmakers, including UK nationals, and we would particularly welcome applications from filmmakers with experience in non-UK animation practice, in keeping with our broad cultural remit.

Equipment
We have a wide range of equipment at your disposal, and can accommodate work in any medium. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Animation Office.

Submission Guidelines
Applicants must submit a proposal containing the following:

a synopsis, treatment and storyboard;
a budget and work schedule;
a CV/biography/filmography;
a DVD or VHS showreel of work.

Fee
You will be paid £2000, plus accommodation.

Deadline for submissions:
7th March 2008

With an average lifespan of just a few weeks, speed-dating seems the perfect solution for butterflies.

Leigh lives and works in London as ananimator/designer/compositor on various TV/web/film projects. Leigh worked for a year and a half as art director on Tiger Aspect's great first series of Charlie and Lola (26 x 10 minute episodes based on the books by Lauren Child).

Bored on a rainy Sunday afternoon a man makes a phone call. He is very surprised when He answers, if only he had a decent question to ask Him.

Matthew Walker is a writer, director and animator based in Bristol. In 2005 he graduated from the University of Wales Newport where he made his award winning film Astronauts. He recently completed a short film for Channel 4 called John and Karen before making Operator as part of the Animator in Residence scheme. Matthew now makes up one 6th of Arthur Cox Ltd and is also a director for Aardman.

Digital shorts

Felix Massie, a graduate from last year, has received funding from the UK Film Council and Aardman as part of South West Screen's Digital Shorts program.

The film will be his first since Keith Reynolds can't make it tonight (2007) which is due to be screened at the Animex festival early next month, along with two other graduate films from Newport - t.o.m. and Stiff Upper Lip.

Jonay Ortiz de Urbina, in collaboration with composer Sergio López Figueroa, has received the Best Original Music award 2007 at the SCIFE festival in Spain, with his graduation film Homeland (2007).

Congratulations to both! Let's hope this is the one of many accolades our graduate films receive this coming festival year. Watch this space!

IV International short film contest on the theme of Intercultural Dialogue

“ANOTHER LOOK” is a short film contest organised by the association Association Artistique Espèce d’Espace in collaboration with Fondazione Mediterraneo and with the support of Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures. The objective of the contest is to favour mutual knowledge and understanding between the peoples of the two rivers of the Mediterranean through a “cinema of proximity” supplied by cinema via Internet.

The subject for the short films and synopsis is intercultural dialogue between the European Union and the countries of the Southern river of the Mediterranean: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.

The contest Direction will select 10 short films (which will be awarded 500 Euros) and 3 synopsis (prize 4.000 euros). The authors of the synopsis engage themselves to make the short films. Selected short films will be diffused on the Internet on www.euromedcafe.org as from April 2008.

Particular attention will be given to those works that:

Underline the importance of dialogue and tolerance in the relations among peoples and cultures;
Give a new look, original and innovative about themes such as integration, immigration, menaces of conflict;
Enhance the knowledge and understanding of other cultures as a way to fight against prejudices, clichés, stereotypes, sources of conflicts and misunderstandings;
Deal about collective imaginaries and mutual representations;
Underline the diversity and richness of peoples of both sides of the Mediterranean;
Attach importance to the right to difference.

The “Another Look” contest has been divided into two sections: ‘Inspiration’ and ‘Completed Shorts’.

Inspiration: 3 prizes of 4,000 euros will be awarded by an international jury to the best synopsis on the theme of intercultural dialogue. The money will go towards the realisation of a short film based on the selected synopsis. Closing date for the synopsis is 5 November 2007; filmmakers will have until 31 March 2008 to make their short films.

Completed Shorts: 10 prizes of 500 euros will be awarded by an international jury on the theme of intercultural dialogue. Closing date for sending films is 10 December 2007.

Michael Fukushima has been directing and producing animation films since 1984, when he left the Classical Animation program at Sheridan College. He also taught Classical Animation at Concordia University for several years. On the strength of his first auteur film, Tako, Fukushima was invited to the National Film Board in 1990, where he completed the Hot Docs-winning animated documentary, Minoru: memory of exile. He’s been an NFB producer since 1997.

Fukushima’s credits as an NFB producer reflect the eclecticism and diversity of his own tastes, ranging from abstract animation to kids’ films to documentaries, the Web, mobile phones and more. He is the creator of the Hothouse, a program that is helping usher in a new generation of animation filmmakers to the NFB. He’s particularly fond of abstract and slightly off-centre animation and is part of the movement melding animation with interactive installations, thereby introducing animation into new venues and to new audiences.

His notable recent productions include the Genie Award-winning cNote by Chris Hinton, Lillian Chan’s award-winning Jaime Lo, small and shy, Sainte Barbe -- a poignant puppet-animation film by Swiss filmmakers Cédric Louis and Claude Barras -- and two shorts from the mobile phone anthology Art of Seduction. Fukushima’s current productions include The Down Project (a workshop film with four adults with Down Syndrome), the interactive installation and short film HA’Aki, and Bruce Alcock’s elegiac Vive la rose. He is in development on high-profile co-productions with the UK’s Paul Bush and Oscar®-nominated Koji Yamamura from Japan.

We are looking for animators to work with the Producer/Director of Animated Minds, an award winning series of short animated documentaries exploring various aspects of mental illness and psychological distress. The first series was commissioned by Channel 4 in 2003 and went on to win numerous awards, including best Animation at the BANFF television festival. Now, 8 more films have been commissioned exploring themes including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Dementia, Anorexia, Deliberate Self-harm, Asperger's Syndrome and various neurological disorders.

Each film will employ varying animation techniques, and the ability to be creative, flexible and innovative is as important as experience. A sensitivity to the subject matter is essential. We're looking for people who are interesting in experimenting with form, using a variety of different techniques.

All films will go into production in early 2008, and a fixed fee will be offered for what we expect to be 4-6 weeks of full time work.

To apply, we need:

(1) A full, up to date CV
(2) A show reel, either on DVD, VHS or DVCAM

Those selected for interview will be asked to bring a visual treatment of an animated documentary dealing with these issues.

Winner at Annecy 2 years in a row!

Congratulations to both Tom Brown and Daniel Gray on their continued success with their graduation film t.o.m. (2006). Last month they were awarded a prestigious Annecy Crystal for Best Graduation Film at the Annecy International Animation Festival 2007. That now makes Newport the only UK college to win 2 years in a row (last year Matthew Walker celebrated this success with his graduate film Astronauts). A full list of Annecy Prize Winners 2007.

Animation student Mark Rogers (below) produced a short 3D film entitled ‘Unification’ about a child who arrives in a strange building and hears noises in the night so wanders down the corridors to investigate.

“I’ve always wanted to be a cartoonist and have wanted to make animation films since I was seven - it’s my passion,” said 22-year-old Mark, who comes from Topsham, near Exeter.
“The film took me a year to make and it’s been a great learning experience here at Newport. I did some very valuable work experience including a stint at Nick Parks’ animation film company Aardman Animation where I helped work on the US version of the TV show 'Creature Comforts'."

Kerry Dyer’s animation film ‘Sura’ is about three characters trapped in a room with a strange box.

“My film is three minutes long but took me a year to make,” said 21-year-old Kerry (above) who comes from Bristol. “The thing I’ve enjoyed most about studying animation at Newport has been the work placements. They have been great because our course tutor Caroline Parsons has so many contacts in the animation film industry.”

Sophia Angela Davis found inspiration in the silent films of the 1920s for her short animation movie project ‘Bananigans!’

“It’s a tortoise and hare version of a cops and robbers story,” said 20-year-old Sophie who comes from Bridgend. “I’ve been into drawing all my life and my ambition when I graduate is to work as an animator and illustrator.”

Two new films by Matthew Walker

Last week Matthew completed his new short film 'John and Karen' which he made as part of Channel 4's 'Daytime Shorts' scheme. It will be broadcast on Channel 4 in an as-yet-unspecified daytime slot on an as-yet-unspecified date later in the year. More information will follow when it is known.

Royal Television Society Student Awards 2006

t.o.m. won the Best Undergraduate Animation award at this years' RTS Student Awards ceremony at the Barbican Centre, London last week. Although Newport has dominated the regional RTS Student Award for Best Animation for the last 6 years, this is our first National success!

Tom and Dan were there to collect their awards in person. Also from the International Film School Wales nominated for Best Undergrade Factual was Murray Mints & Paw Prints by Iain Paterson & Kurt Williams.

What is CAN?
CAN is a unique and pioneering animation scheme developed by Griffilms for S4C. What makes CAN unique is that it gives new and established writers and animators an equal opportunity to present and potentially develop their ideas for a family orientated animation series. The scheme also gives successful participants access to: tailored master classes and mentoring sessions, further training and support in addition to invaluable paid industry experience and the opportunity to be a part of a working production team.

Who’s CAN for?
CAN is for anybody who has a new and imaginative concept for a family orientated animated series. You don’t have to be an experienced writer or animator to submit your idea but you have to be over 18 years of age.

What we’re looking for.
We’re looking for well constructed, strong, creative ideas that have potential to be developed into an entertaining animated series suitable for a family audience. Entrants can submit up to THREE ideas as an individual or as part of a team.

Jem Roberts graduated Newport with his graduation film 'Stuck'.

Considering this year's under-graduates are getting ready to journey to the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival, it seemed only proper to celebrate last years' success, Astronauts. Matthew Walker, who graduated from Newport in 2005, championed an international selection to win Best Graduation Film 2006 at last year's event. Well done Matthew!

Morp! (2006)

Another graduate film enjoying the festival scene is Morp! by Nick Rodgers and Matthew Tempest. Morp! is currently in competition at Animated Exeter along with 3 other graduate films from University of Wales, Newport. All the best with that!

Unfortunately our "tubed" version has sync issues though a better quality version is available for download at www.morpthefilm.co.uk. Whilst completing this piece, Nick and Matt kept a blog entitled Surreal Friends Blog, an informative insight into the film-making process! Both Nick and Matt are currently employed at Blitz Games.

Ffresh 2007

IFSW swept the boards this year at Ffresh winning the Animation, Fiction, Factual, TV and Best of Festival awards.

Animation was won by Tom Brown and Daniel Gray for t.o.m., they also won the Royal Television Society, Welsh Centre Student Television Award 2006 for Animation at the RTS ceremony held at the Festival every year.

t.o.m. by Tom Brown & Daniel Gray, was shortlisted in the Short Film Category of this years Sundance Film Festival 2007 held in Park City, Utah. More information and bad picture HERE.

With help from the British Council and SSAW we were able to fly out there and enjoy the entire festival, with t.o.m. being screened 6 times in various locations (including Robert Redfords Ranch). The film was viewed by over 3000 people and shown before the feature film 'Expired'.

t.o.m. along with 5 other short films received an 'Honorable Mention in Short Filmmaking'.

t.o.m. by Tom Brown & Daniel Gray, was in competition for Best Newcomer at Bristol's Encounters Short Film Festival securing the British 'Cartoon D'or nomination'.

t.o.m. (Tom Brown and Daniel Gray's Graduation film) won Best Student Film at NIAF 2006.

Judged by Jayne Pilling, Igor Kovalyov, Koji Yamamura, Frank Mouris and Prit Parn.

Satisfactory (2006)

During the second semester of their second year, students get an opportunity to work on a group project. As our current second years are just starting this project, here is an example from last year.

Satisfactory was created by Joe Paine, Jonay Ortiz De Urbina, Felix Massie, and Eurico Da Costa NG. It was made with Flash, After Effects and Photoshop and took about 8 weeks. The soundtrack was made with FruityLoops.

Our aim is to update this site often with the work from our current students and hopefully a few favourites from the past. Obviously this is an on-going process so please bear with us while we get it all running smoothly. Dick & Dom

Hey peeps,

If anyone was up on Saturday morning at about 10:15 and watching children's tele on BBC2 for some inexplicable reason, you might have caught 'Dick & Dom's Comic Relief Countdown'. I did the titles, the countdown animations and the little straps that appeared throughout the show.

It was at Tandem films and as it was as a last minute rush job with only 4 days of production, and with Garth at Aardman, I had to do the whole lot on me lonesome. It was pretty tough as I was directing, designing, illustrating, compositing and editing. Also, there was no producer to hand, so I was pretty much doing that too, keeping the CBBC guys up to date. I was completely spent by the last day, but it was worth it for the experience.

It's nothing special, but it was a proper directing job and it got onto the tele, but most importantly it wasn't a commercial or corporate promo, so I'm dead chuffed.

Hello and welcome to our new and improved animation newport website entitled animation newport v2.0!

This website is a multi-user, blogging site dedicated to showcasing the student work from the MA and BA(Hons) Animation programmes located within the Newport School of Art, Media & Design at the University of Wales, Newport as part of the International Film School Wales as a leading partner of the Screen Academy Wales.

Conceived, updated and maintained by the staff and ex-students as a way to celebrate all things past, current and post curricula, this site aims to offer the browser an insight into what it is like to be here, in Newport, studying animation.
